Five reasons why you should be Thrift Shopping

You get to wear big labels. So what if they’ve been worn a few times? Considering how we wear our fanciest clothes only on the most special occasions, chances are that outfit has been worn 3-4 times in its lifetime.

Life can take a toll on you if you’re a student on a budget. Most often than not, you find yourself contemplating your pocket money with the intention of allocating it to getting overpriced textbooks, Friday night plans, birthday gift contribution for Freddie who you were never close to from the start, take-out food for when the only acceptable adjective to describe the food at Residence is ‘edible’ and for buying outfits to look on-point and for those dates where he conveniently “forgets” his wallet. You’d think you have your finances sorted, but who are we kidding?

Also, let’s not forget.. even though you just shopped, you will always have nothing to wear.

You’re broke but can’t afford to show it. Or, you’re on a tight budget and still want those very grey ZARA overalls but the end of season sale just passed. What do you do? THRIFT SHOP!

Here’s why you need to be thrifting right now –

  1. For starters, you’re going to save a great deal of money in comparison to buying first-hand. You’ll have enough cash to splurge on something you might need more, or just save up for later.
  2. You get to wear big labels. So what if they’ve been worn a few times? Considering how we wear our fanciest clothes only on the most special occasions, chances are that outfit has been worn 3-4 times in its lifetime. That’s not bad at all. Think of it this way.  The brand-new clothes you purchase have probably been tried on by 8-10 people in the store trial rooms  anyway! If you’re lucky, you will even discover unused products. This usually happens when someone gifts a very expensive article of clothing/ jewellery/ shoes but the receiver does not fancy them and/or pretends it doesn’t fit and therefore decides to give it away. It’s a win-win.
  3. You get to experiment and choose your style. With a decent budget, you can buy clothes you never thought you could pull-off and give it a shot, without the guilt of spending major bucks. Who knows, you might end up loving it outside of your comfort zone. The variety of available options while thrifting is endless.
  4. If you tend to gain and lose weight quickly, thrift shopping is perfect for multiple reasons. If that H&M pencil skirt doesn’t slide through those curves anymore, you won’t want to cry over it because you didn’t make a huge investment in the first place. Secondly, chances of clothes that you bought from a thrift shop shrinking is close to none because these clothes, being second hand, have been rinsed out enough times to lose its capacity to shrink.
  5. Finally, if you’re the kind who cares what your peers might think, nobody needs to know you bought these crème de la crème designer outfits by thrifting! Second hand buying is not a huge concept as yet in India. When they lay eyes on those pretty pair of shoes on your feet, the first thing they are bound to do is obsess, not question if it’s been worn earlier. On a side note, people judging you based on where you shop from don’t need to be in your life, but that’s a whole other story.

You don’t necessarily need to be a broke dame to thrift shop. Regardless of your age, if you’re broke and/or just looking to experiment, be your fabulous self and THRIFT AWAY!
